Kim Churchill - Tides (Live Filmed Performance)

Kim Churchill, The Indies, TheIndies.Com

Kim Churchill is a independent singer, songwriter and touring artist from Australia. He likes to surf as much as possible and seeks out opportunities to play shows in coastal enclaves where the waves are pumping.

I met up with him when he played the Santa Monica Pier in the early summer of 2011. We first featured Kim on Music Television after seeing thge live performance video featured below. The video was filmed in Australia on a near freezing winter night. He said his fingers were freezing and he made the makeshift gloves he was wearing just before he stepped outside to record this video of his song titled Tides.

After hearing his story and meeting him, I came to the conclusion that he personifies the true indie spirit. He's a free thinker and very mobile man of the world. I have a funny feeling he will have a long life filled with travel and has many more great songs that he will use to pay the way. GC

Nneka might very well be the living modern day female hybrid of Fela Kuti meets Bob Marley. Her music is having a hard time gaining traction in the U.S., where Sony Music, for some reason, withheld the U.S. release of her most recent album which was due out in late September 2011. From the sidelines, Sony's failure to release it in unison with the rest of the countries seems like a bad move. Nneka deserves better.

Although Nneka is signed to a major, she most definitely personifies the indie spirit that The Indies is supposed to be about. She speaks truth to power and truth to her people. She stumps for her native Nigeria. She is from Lagos in the Niger Delta region, a place where global oil conglomerates and corrupt politicians and others have taken unfair advantage of the country and it's inhabitants. She sings of corporate and political greed at the expense of the common man. She does not name names, but the gist is always well placed. Enjoy!
