Playing for Change - Gimme Shelter

The Indies presents the Playing for Change project and their collaborative rendition of Gimme Shelter

The Indies is proud to present another installment of Playing For Change.

The message below is from our friends at Playing For Change in their own words:
Hello Everyone, we are proud to release the newest song around the world from our upcoming PFC 2 album CD/DVD release!! "Gimme Shelter" is a track we have wanted to record for years and we can finally share it with all of you. This song expresses the urgency we all face to unite together as a planet and offers us wisdom with the words, "War, children, it's just a shot away... Love, sister, it's just a kiss away". It really is that simple. We dedicate this song to all the lost, homeless and forgotten people in this world. It is in the shelter of each other that the people live.

Have heard all sorts of recordings of this song, solo and with a band, and love them all. On her own, Whitley has that "it" thing :) GC

Gaea - Live from the Venice Beach Boardwalk

TheIndies.Com presents Gaea - Rock & Roll Cello
Gaea delivers Rock & Roll Cello with Attitude :
Was stoked to find and film this gritty street duo one of the first times they ever passed through Venice Beach. Named Gaea, they always make quite an impression to the many who stop whenever they return to busk on the Venice Boardwalk. I have witnessed true passion emanating from both artists, raw and real. A unlikely great team... with a Rock & Roll attitude! GC

Kim Churchill - Tides (Live Filmed Performance)

Kim Churchill, The Indies, TheIndies.Com

Kim Churchill is a independent singer, songwriter and touring artist from Australia. He likes to surf as much as possible and seeks out opportunities to play shows in coastal enclaves where the waves are pumping.

I met up with him when he played the Santa Monica Pier in the early summer of 2011. We first featured Kim on Music Television after seeing thge live performance video featured below. The video was filmed in Australia on a near freezing winter night. He said his fingers were freezing and he made the makeshift gloves he was wearing just before he stepped outside to record this video of his song titled Tides.

Kim Churchill - Tides

After hearing his story and meeting him, I came to the conclusion that he personifies the true indie spirit. He's a free thinker and very mobile man of the world. I have a funny feeling he will have a long life filled with travel and has many more great songs that he will use to pay the way. GC

New Website Format - Updates Coming - Who is Nneka?

Hi Friends of The Indies!

In the last few days we've switched platforms from a GoDaddy hosted site to this new blog style format. Hope you enjoy the rollout as it occurs.

Please follow this blog and check back often, for there are sure to be some fantastic indie music, art, film & TV and indie news picks from everywhere around the world posted here.

To kick off the celebration, please enjoy this fine artist, whose video is posted below, known as Nneka.

The-Indies, Nneka, music video, song titled Africans, photo by Gregory J. Chamberlain
Nneka in soundcheck at The Troubadour in West Hollywood, California
Nneka might very well be the living modern day female hybrid of Fela Kuti meets Bob Marley. Her music is having a hard time gaining traction in the U.S., where Sony Music, for some reason, withheld the U.S. release of her most recent album which was due out in late September 2011. From the sidelines, Sony's failure to release it in unison with the rest of the countries seems like a bad move. Nneka deserves better.

Although Nneka is signed to a major, she most definitely personifies the indie spirit that The Indies is supposed to be about. She speaks truth to power and truth to her people. She stumps for her native Nigeria. She is from Lagos in the Niger Delta region, a place where global oil conglomerates and corrupt politicians and others have taken unfair advantage of the country and it's inhabitants. She sings of corporate and political greed at the expense of the common man. She does not name names, but the gist is always well placed. Enjoy!
