Survival Sex - The Film - Independent Director Seeks Support

The Indies presents Ukachi Arinzeh

It is rare for this network to plug or endorse any crowdfunding campaigns, but the network of music websites that The Indies belongs to has a favorite recording artist of substance named Nneka. Her music is deep and so are the things she does. She is focused on important issues, and those issues that matter to her are woven into her songs.

Today, we proudly share this plug she made for a filmmaker named Ukachi Arinzeh who is raising funds to finish a film about homeless kids who very unfortunately turn to sex for survival. The film is titled "Survival Sex". True to Nneka's persistent activist spirit, she wrote the following to her friends on Facebook:
Please help support the making of this film, Survival Sex. Working towards changing the problem of homeless teenagers on the streets of Nigeria, Africa and the world. #theropefoundation #survivalsex

Please help to donate in any way you can. We appreciate it.
Just below is a short video of Ukachi Arinzeh describing his film making a direct pitch to potential sponsors on GoFundMe.Com where he hopes to raise $25,000 to complete this worthwhile film making project. Learn more, donate or see how much has been raised so far at Ukachi's GoFund Me page. The fundraising campaign lasts until February 28th. Proceeds will pay for principle photography in March in time to make film festival submission deadlines starting in May.

Here is the audio to the Nneka song titled Street Lack Love

Lyrics to Nneka's song titled Street Lack Love:
This goes out to you people in the streets
Know it is not easy to survive in this world
Where there is no love, where there is no heart
The things we say, we are, we can never be

You find yourself wandering why
Youre sitting in the darkness
Cant find the light in this world
And as we grow old we might understand the truth
The fear of knowing it all
See places where well be,
We never thought we would see

This goes out to you people in the streets
Know it is not easy to survive in this world
Where there is no love, where there is no heart
The things we say, we are, we can never be

You will see we want the things we never have
Continuously dreaming, yeah
I know as long as we believe, we can get outta this
Together well achieve
And sometimes they wanna see your down fall
Think of their own profits and make you misuse
Your fellow brothers and sisters, your family, your friends
We just dont know what to do

This goes out to you people in the streets
Know it is not easy to survive in this world
Where there is no love, where there is no heart
The things we say, we are, we can never be

For nearly 60 years in Nigeria,
People have been suffering from gas flaring, and pollution
Because of big oil extraction companies such as Shell, Chevron, NNPC.
The Niger Delta, the Warri and the Ogoni people have pleading for a change
They have been fighting fot justice,
But the companies, Europe and Nigerian government do not seem to care,
Do not seem to be bothered, they cant be bothered.

Nneka (Live at the Rototom Sunsplash)

Nneka in a filmed performance live at the Rototom Sunsplash. Presented on TheIndies.Com, The Indies

For those unfamiliar with Nneka, she is a serious political anti corruption activist minded artist of substance. Those who cherish and seek this sort of substance will love Nneka. Her songs often sound like personal love songs at first listen, only for the listener to get sucked into deeper messages with heavy stories of corrupt leaders, pillaged countries, stolen dreams and the desperate lives of real people in real places.

The full concert film below is of Nneka's performance at the The Rototom Sunsplash, shot in August 2013 during the 20th anniversary for the festival. Rototom Sunsplash takes place in Spain on the coast of the Mediterranean Sea in the resort town of Benicàssim, a NY walk from Castellón.

The entire concert is excellent, but a favorite start off point for return viewers is at the 22 minute point when she performs her song titled Do You Love Me Now, followed up by songs where the band grooves hard for the remaining 30+ minutes.

Nneka & Chiliscote

Nneka is one of the most badass artists of substance on the global circuit who sings and stumps about topics of substance. And not only topics associated with the plight of her own native home of Lagos, Nigeria. She gets the big picture, the global interconnectedness of it all. A modern day female Bob Marley, Nneka is a true indie spirit with that "it" thing who has collaborated with a great many established artists such as Ziggy and Damian Marley as well as many presently more obscure artists such as the rapper known as Chiliscote of Germany in the videos below.

Nneka - A great live performance

Here is a great performance by Nneka on French TV where she delivers a fantastic performance of one of her songs titled Heartbeat, followed by a interview where she discusses her music and her life.

Who is Nneka?

TheIndies.Com presents Nneka and the music video for her song Africans.

Nneka might very well be the living modern day female hybrid of Fela Kuti meets Bob Marley. Her music is having a hard time gaining traction in the U.S., where Sony Music, for some reason, withheld the U.S. release of her most recent album which was due out in late September 2011. From the sidelines, Sony's failure to release it in unison with the rest of the countries seems like a bad move. Nneka deserves better.

Although Nneka is signed to a major, she most definitely personifies the indie spirit that The Indies is supposed to be about. She speaks truth to power and truth to her people. She stumps for her native Nigeria. She is from Lagos in the Niger Delta region, a place where global oil conglomerates and corrupt politicians and others have taken unfair advantage of the country and it's inhabitants. She sings of corporate and political greed at the expense of the common man. She does not name names, but the gist is always well placed. Enjoy!
